Living in Dana Point

If a placement has brought you to Dana Point under stressful circumstances, here is the good news: you have landed in one of the most livable small towns on the California coast, and our Lantern District homes put you in the middle of its walkable heart.

Your first week

Start with the basics. Groceries are solved on day one: the Ralphs at Lantern Bay Village is a short walk from both of our homes and keeps long hours (roughly 6 a.m. to 1 a.m.), with pharmacy services in the store; a second, larger Ralphs sits at Ocean Ranch Village on Golden Lantern, and a CVS is on Pacific Coast Highway for everything else. The Lantern District’s streets fill in the rest - coffee shops, cafes, and everyday errands without needing the car. On Saturday mornings, the farmers’ market sets up nearby - a good first outing and the fastest way to feel like a local. Families enrolling mid-year should know Dana Point is served by the Capistrano Unified School District; we are glad to help point you to your assigned schools.

The water

Every kind of day at the water is close by, and each beach has a different job. Doheny State Beach is the classic - gentle, beginner-friendly surf, picnic areas, and long sand. Baby Beach, inside the harbor, has calm, protected water that is ideal for small children. Salt Creek and Strand beaches, up the coast toward Monarch Beach, are the scenic ones for a walk and watching real surfers work.

Dana Point Harbor, just below the bluffs, is the town’s living room: walk the marina, browse the harbor shops, and find a table facing the water. It is also the launch point for nearly everything on the water - whale and dolphin safaris (Captain Dave’s and Dana Wharf both run year-round trips), sportfishing charters, sailing lessons at Westwind, kayak and paddleboard rentals at Pure Watersports, scuba trips with Beach Cities Scuba, parasailing over the breakwater, private sail charters when family visits, and the Catalina Express for an island day trip. The Ocean Institute at the harbor’s end is a favorite with kids.

Trails and open space

The Headlands Conservation Area preserves the bluff above the harbor, with trails and lookouts over the whole coastline - the single best first walk in town - and the small Nature Interpretive Center at its trailhead explains what you are looking at. The Blufftop Trail runs behind the Lantern District, Lantern Bay Park overlooks the harbor for picnics, and the Salt Creek Trail follows the canyon down to the beach. In Capistrano Beach, the Palisades Gazebo is the local sunset spot, with Louise Leyden and Sea Terrace parks nearby. When you want a real hike or mountain-bike day, Aliso & Wood Canyons Regional Park is the big backcountry next door.

Getting around

In summer, the free PCH trolley runs through town and connects Dana Point with the neighboring beach cities - you will see its blue coaches pass right through the Lantern District. The rest of the year, most of what you need sits within the neighborhood itself.

Culture and day trips

The oldest neighborhood story is a short drive inland: Mission San Juan Capistrano anchors the area’s history, and Casa Romantica in San Clemente pairs a cultural calendar with ocean-view gardens. Surfers get their own museum at the Surfing Heritage & Cultural Center, and in summer Laguna Beach runs its famous art season - the Festival of Arts with the Pageant of the Masters, and the Sawdust Festival. Kids love the Pacific Marine Mammal Center in Laguna Canyon, where rescued seals and sea lions recover in public view. And when a big day out is called for: Disneyland, Legoland, SeaWorld, and Knott’s Berry Farm are all within day-trip range, with Angels baseball and Honda Center events up the freeway in Anaheim.

Everyday life

A months-long stay needs more than beaches. The Lantern District and its neighbors cover the weekly routine: gyms and studios within a short radius (Beach Cities Fitness, YogaSix, Studio A Pilates & Yoga, GritCycle up at Monarch Beach), day spas in town when you need one (Bella Terrace, White Lotus, Vida Organic Wellness), massage at Thai Body Works or Dana Point Bodycentre, and salons and barbers on the same streets (The District Salon, The Captain’s Chair). The Saturday farmers’ market handles produce; surf shops like Killer Dana and Infinity are local institutions worth a browse; and bigger shopping runs go to the Outlets at San Clemente or South Coast Plaza, both an easy drive. Two residents’ notes: HOM Dana Point sells the kind of home goods that make a furnished house feel like yours, and if you have brought a small dog to one of our pet-friendly homes, The Doggie Barkery at the harbor will make you their favorite person. The Chocolate Soldier and Browne’s Flowers cover the small-gift emergencies.

A few places we send guests

Elsa keeps a running list of local favorites for guests settling in. Bikes and e-bikes rent in the Lantern District (Pedego and Doheny Bike are both neighbors); Girl in the Curl runs a surf shop and surf school for anyone tempted by Doheny’s gentle waves. For a recovery day, the resort spas on the nearby bluffs - the Waldorf Astoria Monarch Beach, The Ritz-Carlton Laguna Niguel, and the spa at Laguna Cliffs - are all a short drive, with day spas in town for something simpler. Gallery Dana Bay shows local art, golfers have the Monarch Beach links minutes up the coast, and families with restless kids should know Disneyland, Legoland, and SeaWorld are all within day-trip range. Ask us for the current list when you arrive - it changes with the seasons.

For our guests

Both the Copper Lantern Townhome and the Copper Lantern Studio sit inside this neighborhood - not near it, in it. If you are weighing a placement here, that walkability is the difference between waiting out a displacement and actually living somewhere.
